WHATS UP WITH ALL THE LINKS???

You may have noticed that I have added a bunch of website links to my blog. You should really take a few minutes and look through them. I only add websites that I find helpful, inspirational or educational.

It has been a year since I stopped treatment. Unfortunately I didn't reach out to anyone until just recently. I knew about the American Cancer Society, National Cervical Cancer Coalition and other various support groups but I chose not to participate, BIG MISTAKE. Just the other day another fighter told me about all sorts of charitable organizations that could really help me out. I have surgery every three months and have to fly from FL to Mass., this adds up. To my surprise there are a bunch of charities that will help pay for my tickets, O-M-G how great is that! So, today I called the ACS and got an ID number and started signing myself up for all sorts of charitable organizations. Flights, places to stay, excursions, magazines, WOW there is so much out there!!

So I strongly suggest to those of you who have been going it alone, give in and take some help!! Please take a minute to look through the websites I have linked, who knows you may really enjoy them and they could help make your life a little easier.

If there are websites you think I should add just let me know, I would be happy to include them. Also, the sites are not dedicated to any specific cancer. Please check em out and let me know what you think.

xoxo
Meaghan

Readers should also not forget to check with local charity chapters. They can be helpful with information such as local places where you can donate money or household items to for those who are currently going through the experience and need some assistance.

I've taken on an incredible challenge. On January 11 2009, I will be participating in the 2009 WALT DISNEY WORLD Marathon Weekend with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training Program. The Team in Training program is the world's largest endurance sports training program with a mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The marathon I am training for is a symbol of the endurance and hope that a patient diagnosed with a blood cancer goes through during treatment.

As a four-year survivor of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, I know first hand how tough the fight can be. I'm alive today because of the medical advances that have been made over the last 20 or so years, many that were funded by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. But there is still much more that can be done.

I have committed myself to run and have agreed to raise a minimum of $2400.00 to help fight blood cancers. I hope to raise $3500.00 or more because proceeds from my fundraising benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to fund research, patient financial assistance and education programs aimed at informing the community about the devastating effects of blood cancers.

When I participate in this event, I'll be doing it in honor of many other survivors and also in memory of those people that have lost their fight. As a three-time Patient Honoree, I have had many participants in past Team in Training events that ran in my honor. Now it will be my turn to run in honor of others. I will be compiling "My Honoree List" and it may get long. Everyone's name will be on my fundraisig site and on me during the Marathon. I've got a start on the list and it's up on my site now.

In order to reach my goal, I need your help. Would you please consider making a donation? Your tax-deductible contribution can be made online at: http://pages.teamintraining.org/nfl/wdw09/aharmon This is a very easy, safe and secure way to donate, plus my site gives you access to the Team In Training Program and LLS so you can see what they are all about. I can also accept cash donations or by check made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Remember that this would be a tax-deductible donation to a non-profit charity. The tax ID number is 13-5644916. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a class organization and they do alot of good things with the funds that are raised. And there are very promising things on the horizon. I have been volunteering for this organization for over a year and a half now, and I was recently given the 2008 Patient Volunteer Award.

Maybe you know of others that would like to support my efforts, I would also be proud to add anyone you might know to "My Honoree List" and run for that person as well. As you can see from the honorees that I have on my list, I am respecting ALL types of survivors. Even though LLS is primarily a blood cancer charity, the research done in those areas are very beneficial to the treatment of other cancers. Besides, we've all walked down similar paths, felt similar fears and anxieties, so we're all in this fight together.

So, without a cure, in the time it has taken you to read this letter, someone has been diagnosed with a blood cancer. Take the next step and be a part of the solution. I hope that you'll share in this incredible adventure with me. Thank you in advance for your generosity in giving!

Sincerely,

Alan R. Harmon

Hi Meaghan, you have done an awesome job on this blog. My sister is 40 years old and battling Stage 3 Cervical Cancer. She has had surgery, chemo, and external and internal radiation. Her follow up pet scan is in mid September and we can't wait to hear the words "you're cured"!

Here is a link to a foundation that provides financial assistance for cancer patients and their families in honor of Jennifer Ireland who passed away from colon cancer at the age of 27. http://www.jenniferirelandfoundation.com/

Thank you so much for doing what you're doing. It's so important to make women more aware of cervical cancer.
